Certified/Lateral Transfer Membership: Before You Purchase Make Sure You Qualify!

THINK YOU'RE A LATERAL? LET'S CHECK: Must be transferring from a Municipal Police Department. Campus Police, Sheriff’s Offices, Security Officers, and other Public Safety personnel are not eligible.

ELIGIBILITY: To qualify for membership under the Lateral Transfer category, you must meet all of the following requirements unless otherwise noted:

• Must be currently employed or affiliated as a sworn, full-time police officer with a Municipal police department for a minimum of 1-year, or have received an out-of-state exemption from the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC).
  • If currently employed, you must be verifiable by the department(s) to which you apply, or be verifiable by your out-of-state agency’s official confirmation.
• Must hold an active POST Certification in good standing, issued by either the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission or your out-of-state POST Commission.
  • Applicants are encouraged to verify their status on the Massachusetts POST Status List to confirm they are active and in good standing.
• Must be in good standing with your department — not suspended, under active investigation, or subject to disciplinary findings that could affect POST certification.
• Must have successfully completed a Massachusetts Full-Time Police Academy approved by the MPTC, or hold an MPTC-approved out-of-state exemption. To learn more about out-of-state exemptions, click here.  

BREAK IN SERVICE:

• Applicants who are not currently active but have a break in service of less than one (1) year, or have an extenuating circumstance resulting in temporary inactivity, may still be eligible for membership. If this applies to you, please contact us to discuss your specific situation before registering.

NOT ELIGIBLE:

• Officers with revoked, suspended, or inactive certification are not eligible. Officers who have resigned in lieu of discipline or who are currently under investigation are also not eligible.
• To confirm eligibility, applicants should verify that they are not listed on the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission’s POST Status List as revoked, suspended, or inactive. The POST Status List  is public record, maintained by the POST Commission, and reflects current certification and disciplinary status as publicly available under Massachusetts law. 

If you do not qualify as a POST Certified/Lateral Transfer, depending on the circumstances, you may be eligible to register under the Entry-Level category instead.

REQUIREMENTS - CERTIFIED ACADEMY TRAINED MEMBER:

ELIGIBILITY: POST Certified Full-Time Police Academy graduates who have not yet been employed.

• Must have successfully completed a Full-Time Police Academy approved by the MPTC (Municipal Police Training Committee), or have received an out-of-state exemption by the MPTC.
• Hold an active POST Certification, but are not currently employed with a law enforcement agency.

NOT ELIGIBLE:

• If you have not yet completed a Massachusetts Full-Time Police Academy or do not hold active POST certification, please register under the Entry-Level membership instead.
