FAQs for Candidates
Understanding Your "Application Status" on Submitted Applications
I see my application status has changed in Submitted Applications—how do I know what it means, and should I do anything next?
As departments move you through the hiring process, they can update your application status appearing in real time on your dashboard. This feature is not an invitation to contact departments, but rather a tool to help agencies keep applicants informed while allowing you to navigate your job search effectively.
How It Works:
- Every application starts as “New Applicant.”
- Status updates reflect where you stand in the review and selection process.
- You may see updates like:
- “Reviewing Application”
- “Invited to Fitness Test”
- “Passed Fitness Test”
- “Invited to Oral Interview”
- “Doesn’t Meet Requirements”
- …and others, based on the department’s process.
What to Watch For:
✔ If your status is “Doesn’t Meet Requirements,” review the job post—you may have missed a key qualification.
✔ If your status is “Invited to Fitness Test” but you haven’t received an invite, check your getbadged Message Inbox or your spam folder.
✔ If you suspect a missing message, this is an appropriate time to reach out to the department contact.
Privacy Assurance: Only you and the hiring agency updating your status can see this information. Your job search activity is never visible to other agencies.
Trust the process, stay informed, and manage your job search with confidence!

Civil Service vs. Non-Civil Service Police Hiring in MA
Understanding the Two Paths to a Law Enforcement Career
Massachusetts has 352 municipal police departments, and more than 240 operate as Non-Civil Service agencies. This creates more year-round opportunities for aspiring officers, as these departments have greater flexibility in their hiring process compared to Civil Service agencies.
We know navigating different hiring processes can be confusing—every department has its own requirements, qualifications, and timelines. At getbadged, we simplify and centralize police hiring, making it easier for candidates to apply to multiple agencies without the hassle of navigating different systems.
✅ Non-Civil Service Hiring:
- Year-Round Opportunities – Departments can hire anytime, creating more openings.
- More Flexibility – Agencies set their own hiring criteria, including residency, education, and experience requirements.
- Faster Hiring Process – Departments can interview and hire qualified applicants quickly, often completing the process in just a few months.
- Merit-Based Selection – Hiring decisions are based on qualifications, experience, and department fit, rather than placement on a ranked eligibility list.
✅ Civil Service Hiring:
- Exam-Based Entry – Candidates must take the Massachusetts Civil Service Exam, which is offered once a year.
- Eligibility List System – Candidates are ranked based on exam scores, residency, veteran status, and other preferences.
- Structured Process – Departments must follow strict Civil Service rules when selecting candidates.
- Limited Hiring Flexibility – Departments have less control over adjusting qualifications or expediting hiring based on immediate needs.
Streamlined Through getbadged – Entry-Level candidates register for an exam held 2-5 times per month, with scores reported same day (online) or next business day (in-person)—allowing you to apply quickly to multiple Non-Civil Service agencies. Certified & Lateral Transfer Officers are exempt from the exam requirement and can apply directly using a single, standardized application—maximizing hiring opportunities with zero hassle.
Whether you’re looking to join a Non-Civil Service or Civil Service department, understanding the different pathways is key to positioning yourself for success in law enforcement.
