Minimum Requirements

Do You Qualify? Lateral Transfer Officers must meet the following qualifications necessary for consideration:

✔️ A FT enforcement officer from any Massachusetts law enforcement agency must have experience in his/her agency to be considered as a Lateral Transfer.
✔️ Must have completed academy training through a full-time MPTC Police Academy. Bridge Academy training does not meet the eligibility requirement.
✔️ Must be POST Certified, and of good moral character and fit for employment, as determined by the POST Commission.
✔️ A FT Lateral Transfer applicant must be in good standings with the National Decertification Index (NDI).
✔️ Must pass thorough Background Investigation.
✔️ Must pass a Medical Exam and Psychological Exam (if none on record with current agency).
✔️ Must pass Physical Abilities Test.

Police Officers must perform a wide range of law enforcement duties and responsibilities necessary to the stability and safety of the community. This means taking initiative, building trust, and making decisions that reflect sound judgment, professionalism, and integrity.

Learn More About Your Role

Identify criminal offenders and criminal activity. Where appropriate, apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings.
Reduce the opportunities for the commission of crime through preventative patrol and other measures.
Aid individuals who are in danger of physical harm.
Facilitate the movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic; enforce traffic rules and regulations and motor vehicle laws by issuing citations.
Create and maintain a feeling of security in the community.
Response to emergency situations and provide appropriate services as necessary.
Promote and preserve the peace.
Creatively solve problems related to improving the quality of life in the community.
Complete detailed reports on all crimes, vehicle accidents, and other incidents requiring police attention.
Properly maintain equipment and supplies.
Perform all other essential functions of a municipal police officer identified by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Human Resources Division.
