Minimum Requirements

Minimum Eligibility Overview: Below are the minimum requirements as outlined by Massachusetts state law for police officer candidates, as well as the minimum requirements unique to the Plainville Police Department.

State-Mandated Requirements (Per Massachusetts Law)

These are the minimum qualifications required by state law to serve as a police officer in Massachusetts. All applicants must meet these baseline standards to be considered eligible.

Be a U.S. Citizen (Birth or naturalization).
Must be at least 21 years of age upon submission of application.
Possess a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
Ability to successfully complete a medical and psychological fitness evaluations (after conditional offer).
Ability to successfully complete the Full-Time MPTC Police Academy.
Ability to obtain an unrestricted Massachusetts Class A License to Carry a Firearm (LTC-A).
Not be a convicted felon, or have convictions from another jurisdiction that would be treated as a felony in the Commonwealth.
Not smoke and stay a non-smoker. Smoking of tobacco products is prohibited as outlined by G.L. c. 41 Section 101A of the Massachusetts General Laws.
Must pass a Background Investigation.
Must be of good moral character and fit for employment for employment in law enforcement as determined by POST.

Plainville PD Department-Specific Requirements

In addition to state standards, Plainville PD has outlined minimum qualifications and preferences that reflect the needs, values, and expectations of our department and community.

Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
Achieve 70%+ on the getbadged entry exam.
Must reside within 15 miles of Plainville (border-to-border, as the crow flies), prior to the end of the probationary period (one-year after successful completion of FTO program.
Must be free of tattoos past the wrist toward the hand, and on the neck or face.

Have a strong character background.
Be willing and able to meet the duties and obligations of a Plainville Police Officer.
Satisfy the Department's physical fitness standards for initial appointment.
Satisfy the Department's medical and psychological standards for initial appointment.

Salary range: $60,408 at start, then $57,083 - $81,937 as of July 1, 2024.
Private paid detail opportunities, paying $73/hour.
