Minimum Requirements

The Lexington PD requires applicants receive an 80% or above on the getbadged Entry Exam, and 

  • Be a U.S. Citizen (Birth or naturalization).
  • Be at least 21 years of age upon submission of application.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED Certificate. Preference will be given to those candidates that have a college degree(s), military experience of combination.
  • Possess a valid Massachusetts driver's license.
  • Have the ability to obtain an unrestricted Massachusetts Class A License to Carry a Firearm.
  • Have the ability to pass the Physical Abilities Test (PAT's), and psychological fitness for duty examination after receiving a conditional offer of employment (see PAT info in the Additional Qualifications below).
  • Have a strong character background.
  • Be willing and able to meet the duties and obligations of a Lexington Police Officer.
  • Must live within 20 miles of Lexington (as the crow flies, border to border), prior to the end of your "Probationary Period" (one year upon successful completion of the Field Training Program).
  • Not be a convicted felon, or have convictions from another jurisdiction that would be treated as a felony in the Commonwealth.
  • Not smoke and stay a non-smoker. Smoking tobacco products is prohibited as outlined by the G.L. Chapter 41 Section 101A of the Massachusetts General Laws.
  • Be able to obtain CJIS Certification.
  • Must pass thorough background investigation.
  • Must achieve 80% or higher on the getbadged Entry Exam.

Salary & Compensation

As of July 1, 2023, the Lexington PD has exciting news to share: the Department's Quinn Bill benefit is being reinstated. 

The Quinn Bill, formerly known as the Police Career Incentive Pay Program, was initially introduced with the aim of motivating police officers to further their education. With this reinstatement, officers who have dedicated five or more years of service with the LPD can anticipate receiving an extra stipend based on their educational achievements. This move is expected to encourage a pursuit of higher education among the officers and foster professional development within the police force. The breakdown of the educational bonuses is as follows:

  • 10% increase for holding an associate's degree,
  • 20% for a bachelor's degree, and
  • 25% for a master's degree.
