Minimum Requirements

Think you have what it takes? To be considered an eligible candidate, applicants must meet or exceed the Franklin Police Department’s Required Qualifications and Required Skills.

Required Qualifications:

• Be a United States Citizen;
• Be at least 21 years of age;
• Not be a convicted felon, or have any equivalent convictions that would be a felony in Massachusetts;
• Hold an Associate’s Degree or have completed two+ years of service in the active military with an honorable discharge (degree required within 42 months if hired via military experience);
• Must not smoke or use tobacco products of any kind prior to or after appointment;
• Candidates must not have any tattoos, body art, brands or scarifications of any type that are visible above the shirt collar (face, neck or head);
• Possess a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License;
• Have the ability to obtain a Massachusetts Class A License to Carry a Firearm;
• Must currently reside or be willing to relocate within 30 miles of the Town of Franklin (as the crow flies, border to border) within reasonable time upon appointment;
• Must successfully pass a pre-employment medical screening prior to appointment;
• Must successfully complete a pre-employment psychological fitness for duty examination prior to appointment;
• Must successfully pass a thorough background investigation;
• Must take and pass a Physical Abilities Test (PAT):

• Must take and pass the Recruit Academy Entry-Level Fitness Standard administered by the MPTC for entry to a MPTC Police Academy. 
• Must have the ability to successfully complete an approved MPTC Police Academy;
• Must be able to achieve basic certification as a Police Officer from POST;
• Have a strong character background; 
• Must receive a passing grade of 70% or above on the GetBadged Entry Exam; and
• Be willing and able to meet the duties and obligations of a Franklin Police Officer.

Required Skills:

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and in teams.
• Decision-making under pressure.
• Report writing and investigative skills.

Additional Qualifications

Duties & Responsibilities of a Franklin PD Patrol Officer: 

• Upholding the law.
• Following lawful orders.
• Maintaining professional accountability while working collaboratively to ensure public safety. 
• Respond to emergencies.
• Conduct thorough investigations.
• Collect and preserve evidence.
• Accurately document all activities in accordance with department policy.
• Patrol assigned areas to deter and address crime, traffic violations, and safety hazards while maintaining awareness of community conditions and high-risk locations.
• Perform security checks.
• Assist with traffic control and special events.
• Engage in community policing efforts.

Throughout all duties, officers are expected to maintain readiness, operate issued equipment safely, communicate effectively, and provide courteous service to the public.

Salary & Compensation

Salary Range: 

• $60,400 (at start) then $60,400 – $76,000 annually; plus:
  • Union contract incentives.
  • Education Incentive for associates (10%), bachelors (20%) and master (25%) degrees.

Collective Bargaining Agreement Highlights:

• Schedule - Patrol Division: 4 on 4 off; 10 hours.
• Night shift differential: $160 / biweekly.
• Hazardous Duty Pay: $20 / biweekly.
• Full and part time specialty stipends.
• Hazardous duty pay.
• Paid Details: Details are scheduled in (4) four hour minimum blocks, increasing to (8) eight hours or longer, with pay rates at $70 / hour.
• Callback: Minimum (4) four hours.
