The Swampscott Police Department is hiring! We’re looking to fill seven (7) Full-Time Entry-Level Police Officer positions and are actively accepting applications from eligible candidates.

Minimum Requirements

Do You Meet All the Requirements? See If You Qualify:

🟦 Be a U.S. Citizen (by birth or naturalization) or provide proof of legal authority to work as a police officer in the United States.

🟦 Be at least 21 years of age at the time of the exam.

🟦 Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate. Preference given to candidates with a college degree, military experience, or a combination of both.

🟦 Be and remain a non-smoker.

🟦 Not be a convicted felon or have any equivalent felony convictions.

🟦 Not be decertified by POST (M.G.L. Chapter 41 Section 94A) or appear on any national or local decertification list.

🟦 Be in compliance with the 20-mile residency requirement (M.G.L. Chapter 41 Section 99A) upon completion of the Police Academy.

🟦 Have no tattoos, body art, brands, or scarifications that are deemed offensive, extremist, racist, indecent, violent, or sexist.

🟦 Possess, or obtain by the date of the exam, a valid Massachusetts driver’s license.

🟦 Have the ability to obtain a Massachusetts Class A License to Carry a Firearm (LTC-A) at the time of hire.

🟦 Have the ability to pass the Massachusetts Police Training Council (MPTC) Academy curriculum to achieve basic certification as a Police Officer.

🟦 Maintain an impeccable character background.

🟦 Be willing and able to meet the duties and obligations of a Swampscott Police Officer, including working various shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime on an “order-in” or emergency basis.

🟦 Receive a passing score of 70% or above on the PES/getbadged Entry Exam.

🟦 Pass a physical abilities test aligned with MPTC Academy admission standards.

🟦 Pass a medical examination, including drug screening.

🟦 Pass a psychological exam.

Additional Qualifications

A patrolman assigned to the Patrol Division shall be responsible for the efficient performance of all duties in conformance with the policies and procedures of the Department.

As a Swampscott PD patrolman, you will be expected to:

Identify criminal offenders and criminal activity and, where appropriate, to apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings.
Reduce the opportunities for some crimes through preventive and directed patrols and crime prevention measures.
Aid individuals who are in danger of physical harm.
Protect constitutional guarantees.
Assist those who cannot care for themselves.
Resolve conflict.
Identify problems that are potentially serious law enforcement or governmental problems.
Create and maintain a feeling of security in the community.
Promote and preserve civil order.
Provide other services on an emergency basis.
Perform other related specific duties and responsibilities as required by the Chief of Police or his designee.

Starting Annual Salary: $70,000* (with a potential increase anticipated in July 2025)
*Salary includes valuable benefits such as Longevity pay, Shift Differential, Paid Holidays, and Educational Incentive (based on a Master’s Degree).

In addition to base pay, other benefits & compensation can include:

Shift Differential of up to 7.5%.
Longevity Awards up to 5.75%.
Numerous specialty positions that offer bonus stipends.
Swampscott PD offers generous time off benefits.
- New hires start with (2) weeks' vacation, increasing to (3) weeks at (5) years, (4) weeks at 10 years, and (5) weeks at 20 years. After 20 years, officers receive additional longevity days off at (1) day per year, capped at seven years.
- Officers also receive (4) personal days per year,
- (1) floating holiday,
- 15 sick days per year, and
- The ability to accrue comp time, as well as, incentive days for not calling in sick.
The SPD offers excellent health insurance options through the Massachusetts Government Insurance Commission.
Employee dental and life insurance options.
Pension package of up to 80% of salary through Massachusetts Retirement System.

Hiring Process

Achieve a passing score of 70% and above on the getbadged written exam.
Pass the physical abilities test, demonstrating the ability to be accepted in an MPTC Academy.
Oral board interview. A (5) member panel consisting of residents and the Town and members of the department.
Following the Oral Board Interview, candidates will be provided with an SPD-specific job application.
Those candidates receiving a positive recommendation from the Oral Board will be subjected to an extensive background check.
Those candidates who pass a background check, are deemed certifiable under POST regulations and to possess good character and background will then be interviewed by the Chief of Police.
Those candidates deemed by the Chief to be exceptional candidates for employment will be scheduled to meet and interview with the Town Administrator.
Those candidates deemed by the Town Administrator to be exceptional candidates for employment will receive a conditional offer of employment.
Following the conditional employment offer, candidates will be scheduled for medical and psychological examinations.
Candidates will be scheduled for an MPTC Academy.
