Roxbury Community College Police Department (RCC PD) serves a diverse campus community in the heart of Boston, maintaining a safe, secure, and professional environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

RCC PD is seeking a Campus Police Officer (CPO) III – Sergeant to serve as a first-line supervisor within the Department of Public Safety. This role is responsible for overseeing daily shift operations, directing sworn and non-sworn personnel, and ensuring consistent, effective execution of departmental responsibilities.

This is a leadership position—hands-on, visible, and accountable. The Sergeant sets the tone, manages performance, and ensures operations run smoothly while responding to real-time incidents and evolving situations.

Minimum Requirements

Below are the minimum requirements set by Roxbury Community College Police Department. Applicants who do not meet these requirements are not eligible for consideration.

  • Must have at least 3 years of verified law enforcement experience.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Possess an active Massachusetts Driver's License.
  • Must have an active License to carry firearms (LTC non-restricted).
  • Possess an Associate's degree or Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement).
  • Must have completed an MPTC Recruit Officer Course from an MPTC approved or authorized academy, or obtained a permanent exemption from the MPTC.
  • Must be eligible or currently hold a certification for the Massachusetts Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST), and remain a Certified Officer for the duration of their employment.
  • Must be eligible for appointment as Special State Police Officer in accordance with M.G.L. ch.22 s. 63, and able to maintain their eligibility for the duration of their employment.
  • Possess knowledge of police practices and investigative procedures of a comprehensive campus law enforcement program.
  • Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation, a pre-employment psychological examination, and a pre-employment medical exam.
  • Must have the ability to interpret, apply, and make decisions in accordance with pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Ability to operate specialized law enforcement equipment including specialized police vehicles, radios, and video systems.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; and respond well to questions.

Additional Qualifications

As a RCC PD CPOIII Sergeant, you must have the demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of a police officer. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Reports to the Deputy Chief and oversees daily shift operations.
  • Supervises sworn Campus Police Officers and non-sworn Public Safety Officers; ensures campus safety and security.
  • Manages patrol operations and enforces departmental policies, state laws, and personnel compliance.
  • Conducts roll call to brief staff on incidents, trends, and updates.
  • Reviews and approves reports for accuracy and completeness before forwarding through the chain of command.
  • Uses sound judgment to handle incidents, crises, and conflict resolution; may respond to active scenes to direct staff.
  • Serves as a mentor and role model, promoting professionalism and ethical conduct.
  • Responds to emergencies (criminal activity, medical, fire, alarms, accidents) and provides aid and referrals to victims.
  • Conducts initial and follow-up investigations; prepares incident and accident reports.
  • Maintains confidentiality and adheres to professional standards.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned; serves as a key first-line supervisor impacting staff and the RCC community.
