Roxbury Community College PD: Full-Time Entry Level Officer

These are the minimum qualifications required by state law to serve as a police officer in Massachusetts. All applicants must meet these baseline standards to be considered eligible.

• Be a U.S. Citizen (Birth or naturalization).
• Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire.
• Possess a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
• Ability to successfully complete Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST) -approved physical and psychological fitness evaluations.
• Ability to successfully complete the Full-Time MPTC Police Academy.
• Possess an unrestricted Massachusetts Class A License to Carry a Firearm (LTC-A).
• Not be a convicted felon, or have convictions from another jurisdiction that would be treated as a felony in the Commonwealth.
• Not smoke and stay a non-smoker. Smoking of tobacco products is prohibited as outlined by G.L. c. 41 Section 101A of the Massachusetts General Laws.
• Must pass a POST compliant Background Investigation, including a state and national background check.
• Ability to possess and maintain first aid and CPR certificates.
• Must be of good moral character and fit for employment for employment in law enforcement as determined by POST.

In addition to state standards, Roxbury Community College PD has outlined minimum qualifications and preferences that reflect the needs, values, and expectations of our department and community.

• Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
• Ability to learn police procedures and practices, the law of arrest, and criminal procedures.
• Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare written reports.
• Possess reliable transportation to travel to and from meetings, training, or campus and community locations as requested.
• Possess physical stamina and endurance. 

• Preference may be given to candidates who meet certain additional qualifications (such as prior law enforcement or relevant experience and specialized training). However, all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply and will be given full consideration.

As a RCC PD officer, you must have the demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of a police officer. This includes, but is not limited to:

• Establish & maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
• Deal tactfully and establish rapport with others.
• Interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional distress.
• Maintain a calm manner, make decisions, and act quickly in stressful and emergency situations.
• Exercise discretion in handling confidential information, and use sound judgement.
• Follow oral and written instructions.
• Maintain accurate records, using proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
• Read, write, and comprehend the English language.
• Work accurately with names, numbers, codes and/or symbols.
• Conduct interviews.
