Minimum Requirements

Minimum Eligibility Overview: Below are the minimum requirements as outlined by Massachusetts state law for police officer candidates, as well as the minimum requirements unique to the Nahant Police Department.

As a non-Civil Service agency, we have the flexibility to establish department-specific criteria to help us identify the strongest and most aligned candidates for our team.

State-Mandated Requirements (Per Massachusetts Law)

These are the minimum qualifications required by state law to serve as a police officer in Massachusetts. All applicants must meet these baseline standards to be considered eligible.

Be a U.S. Citizen (Birth or naturalization).
Have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
Candidate must be 21 years of age to enter a Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) Academy.
Must have the ability to be POST Certified.
Be able to obtain CJIS certification.
Possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain an unrestricted Massachusetts Class A License to Carry a Firearm (LTC-A).
Not be a convicted felon, or have convictions from another jurisdiction that would be treated as a felony in the Commonwealth.
Not smoke and stay a non-smoker. Smoking of tobacco products is prohibited as outlined by G.L. c. 41 Section 101A of the Massachusetts General Laws.
Must be able to pass the fitness test for entrance into the MPTC Police Academy.

Nahant PD Department-Specific Requirements

In addition to state standards, the Nahant PD has outlined minimum qualifications and preferences that reflect the needs, values, and expectations of our department and community.

Be at least 20 years of age upon submission of application.
Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
Must pass the department-held fitness test (see details below).
Receive a passing grade of 70% and above on the getbadged Entry Exam.

Additional Qualifications

The Nahant PD requires eligible candidates pass its department-administered fitness test. This ensures candidates demonstrate the strength, endurance, and readiness expected of our officers.

All candidates must pass the fitness test to advance to the next stage of the NPD hiring process. It is strongly recommended that you train to develop your strength and endurance in order to pass this section of the process.

Nahant PD has streamlined the application and onboarding process so you can make your move quickly, smoothly, and with confidence.

The Road to Getting Hired

The Selection Team will identify police officer candidates.
Eligible candidates will proceed to the Physical Agility Test (PAT).
- The Department will use an agility test (such as the "New Cooper Age and Gender Base Standards for Law Enforcement"), consistent with other Massachusetts Agencies.
Police officer candidates who have passed both the entry exam and the agility test may move forward in the process.
Candidate must pass a thorough background investigation.
